BACKGROUND
The Yard is a social enterprise with the aim to equip young people
with skills and knowledge that will empower them to fulfil their
personal and professional potential. The Yard Crew is a programme
designed to build young people?s practical and soft skills with the
ultimate goal of increasing their opportunity for employment.
We are now looking for someone skilled in woodwork (and ideally
woodturning) to work alongside our Youth Work team in the day to day
running of this programme and the social enterprise aspect of the
Yard.
ROLE DESCRIPTION
The Woodwork instructor will be responsible for the following:
* Delivery of desired outcomes for The Yard Crew in line with that
programme?s strategic objectives.
* Develop and implement meaningful tasks that will engage and
attract participants of The Crew.
* Work alongside the youth workers in managing tailored development
plans with Yard participants.
* Train volunteers and staff in woodwork skills as required.
* As part of a team, and with the support of the Crew participants
design, develop and produce products to be sold as part of the Yard
social enterprise.
* Contribute to the wider strategic development of the Yard Social
enterprise by playing an active role.
* Be familiar with and abide by the project?s policies and
procedures, including child protection and health and safety
guidelines for workers and volunteers.
* Ensure that the values and ethos of the project are reflected in a
consistent manner in all activities.
ESSENTIAL:
* Skilled woodworker/carpenter with some knowledge of woodturning.
* Experience of teaching woodturning or carpentry in a formal or
informal setting
* A desire to build meaningful relationships with young people.
* Self-starter with a good team ethos and have ability to work on
own.
* Appreciation and support of the vision and values of Solas Project

DESIRABLE:
* A recognised qualification in one of the following
* woodwork/carpentry
* business/social enterprise
* Youthwork
* Understanding and experience of supporting young people impacted
by social disadvantage.
* Innovative approach with the ability to identify and develop new
and fresh ways to support young people that will further the
organisation?s mission.
* Experience of managing challenging behaviour and a proven record
of building relationships with young people.
